How to Draw a Truffula Tree From the Lorax

This fun Dr. Seuss craft can be used as easy-to-make cupcake toppers or as an engaging (but wonderfully easy) Lorax truffula trees craft. It's a perfect reading lesson craft, to celebrate March 2nd – Dr. Seuss's birthday or Earth Day.

I can vividly remember how The Lorax was one my favorite children's books (really all of Dr. Seuss's books were). It was also my youngest child's favorite book and he'd ask anyone and everyone to read it to him… again and again and again.

The story is engaging while it shares the message of fighting against corporate greed and taking action to protect the environment. To quote the titular character, The Once-ler,

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.It's not.

The truffula tree bears fruit that is eaten by the Bar-ba-loots as their main diet. The truffula trees are being cut down for the large tuft at the top which is incredibly soft and used to knit Thneeds.

The excessive cutting of truffula trees is risking the Bar-ba-loots existence since the fruit is the primary diet of the Bar-ba-loots. The main character, The Lorax, is concerned for them. It takes 10 months for the truffula seed to germinate, and then 20 years for the tree to grow to maturity.

The Lorax share the message of industrial impact on the environment, air pollution, harming the environment that different varieties of animals rely on, and personal responsibility. These intense messages are discussed in Dr. Seuss's typical captivating manner.

What you need to make Lorax Truffula Tree Cupcake Toppers

• 3 cupcake wrappers per flower
  • You can use any color cupcake papers
  • Or look specifically for Lorax tree colorful trees colors
    • Red
    • Orange
    • Yellow
    • Pink
    • Purple
• 1 paper straw per flower
  • You can use any straws you have
    • You can use a black Sharpie to add the stripes seen on truffula tree trunks to white or any color straws
  • But striped straws add to the whimsy of the iconic tree
    • Dr. Seuss' imagination created trunks that are colorful with black stripes
• Glue
  • You can use fast drying craft glue
  • Or a hot glue gun (be sure to supervise children if using hot glue)
• Scissors

How to make this truffula trees craft step-by-step

1. Line up three cupcake liners and use the scissors to cut slits around the edge of each wrapper.
2. Fold the wrappers in half and cut a small slit in the center of each one.
3. Push the straw through the hole in one of the cupcake wrappers and slide it down one inch from the top of the straw.
4. Use a tiny bit of glue to bunch the wrapper around the straw to hold it in place. Repeat steps 3 & 4, and continue adding cupcake wrappers to the straw and gluing in the center until all the wrappers are attached.
   • Twist each paper just a bit as you add it to the straw so that the cut pieces of paper are staggered a bit. This makes the truffala tree tops look more authentic

Substitution Ideas for Supplies

• Tissue paper in place of the cupcake liners
  • Orange tissue paper can be used to make a Lorax in addition to your own truffula trees
• Use small cupcake papers to make smaller trees
  • You can substitute 1 inch squares or slightly larger squares of tissue paper for the smaller cupcake cups
• Pipe cleaners in place of the straw for the truffula tree trunks
• Cut the paper straws or pipe cleaners to different lengths to create more variety in making a forest of truffula trees
• Glue dots for the glue
  • Cutting the glue dots in half will help hide them better so your craft looks neater
